A glass railing is the difference between a balcony you use and one you avoid. The view is the reason for the terrace, and a metal-picket railing kills it. NYC code is strict on this — anything above 24" requires guardrail-rated glass, and high-rise terraces need fully laminated tempered glass that holds together if it breaks. We install frameless, channel-mounted, and standoff-pin glass railings for Manhattan high-rise terraces, Brooklyn brownstone stairs, and rooftop decks across the city. Every install is DOB-compliant and engineered for the right load class. We coordinate with building management on coop and condo installs and pull permits where required.

Railing systems we install

Engineered for NYC code, designed for the view

  • Frameless Channel-Mount

Glass set into a continuous floor channel — the cleanest, most modern look. Top edge polished, no top rail.

  • Standoff Pin Mount

Glass held by stainless standoff pins on the side of a fascia. Maximum view, structural-glass spec.

  • Top-Rail Channel

Glass with a continuous top rail (stainless, aluminum, or wood). Combines glass clarity with handrail comfort.

  • Stair Railings

Interior glass stair railings for brownstone retrofits, lofts, and modern townhouses. Continuous or panelized.

  • Pool & Spa Railings

Code-rated glass railings for residential pools and rooftop spa decks. Salt-air-resistant hardware.

  • Commercial Balcony

High-load commercial glass railings for office terraces, restaurant rooftops, and retail mezzanines.

The experience from start to finish was top notch. If you know anything about the triangle, where it is said that you can get all three- that is a lie. With Glowglass, you get fair pricing, quality and top notch service. If you are in the market for windows, use Glowglass. I highly recommend them.

We had a great experience with Glowglass. They were on site the next day, and back to do the job the following. It was not an easy job as an o resized screen door- but they did it perfectly. We highly recommend them!

My screen door was repaired beautifully within one week . It’s a family business so they really give attention to detail, and they were communicative, very efficient and pleasant .

Railings FAQ

Code, safety, and timeline questions.

  • Is glass safe for a high-rise balcony?

Yes — when specced correctly. NYC code requires fully laminated tempered glass for any guardrail above the second floor. Laminated glass has a PVB interlayer between two tempered panes; if one pane ever breaks, the interlayer holds the glass in place. We engineer every install to exceed code load and impact requirements.
  • What height does NYC code require?

Residential guardrails must be a minimum of 42" tall, measured from the walking surface. Commercial typically same. Pool enclosures and certain mezzanines have additional requirements. We confirm the exact spec for your building before quoting.
  • Frameless vs channel-mounted — what should I pick?

Both work. Frameless channel-mount has glass set into a continuous floor channel — cleanest look, no visible hardware beyond the channel. Standoff-pin mount uses stainless pins through the glass — slightly more industrial look, but easier on irregular substrates.
  • What is the lead time?

Measurement and template typically take 1–2 hours on-site. Tempered + laminated glass is fabricated in 2–4 weeks. Install runs 1–3 days depending on length. Including DOB permitting (if required) the full project usually completes in 6–10 weeks.
  • Do you need a permit?

For exterior guardrails on terraces and balconies, yes — NYC DOB typically requires a permit. For interior stair railings and code-compliant retrofits within existing openings, often no. We confirm at the estimate and pull permits when needed.
